Shamanic Practitioner Certification
Shamanism is one of humanity’s oldest spiritual practices, with roots reaching back tens of thousands of years and appearing in cultures throughout the world. At its heart is the understanding that everything is alive, everything has spirit, and we are part of an interconnected web of life. The Earth beneath our feet, the trees, plants, animals, stones, waters and elements are not separate from us, but part of a living world with which we can develop relationship, communication and reciprocity.
Shamanism also recognizes that the physical world we see is only one part of our reality. The shamanic practitioner learns to move consciously between the seen and unseen worlds, developing relationships with helping spirits and working within these realms to receive guidance, facilitate healing and help restore balance.
Shamanism brings us back into relationship with the Earth, with Spirit, with ourselves and with the living world around us.
“What’s really important about shamanism is that there is another reality that you can personally discover...we are not alone.”
-Michael Harner
The Path of Direct Revelation
Shamanism is not a religion, nor does it require you to follow a particular faith or belief system. At its heart, shamanism is a path of direct revelation, inviting you to experience the spiritual world for yourself rather than simply accepting what someone else tells you to believe. This path is open to everyone, regardless of background, religion or previous spiritual experience. Through shamanic practice, you learn to develop your own relationship with Spirit, nature and the unseen world, receiving guidance and wisdom through direct personal experience. You are not asked to follow someone else's path. You are given the tools to discover your own.
What Does It Mean to Be a Shamanic Practitioner?
To become a Shamanic Practitioner is to move beyond exploring shamanism solely for your own personal healing and spiritual growth and begin learning how to work in service to others.
Traditionally, the shaman acted as an intermediary between the physical and spiritual worlds. The work was not simply about receiving messages or having spiritual experiences. It carried a responsibility to help restore healing, harmony and balance within the individual, the community and the natural world.
A Shamanic Practitioner learns to journey with purpose, develop relationships with helping spirits, ask the right questions, listen deeply, discern what is being shown and understand which healing practice may be appropriate. As the training progresses, students learn specific practices for healing and divination while developing the experience and confidence necessary to bring those practices together when working with another person.
This requires more than learning techniques. It requires practice, experience, humility, integrity, discernment and a strong personal relationship with Spirit.
Why Shamanic Practitioner and Not Shaman?
This program does not certify anyone to become a Shaman.
The word shaman carries cultural and traditional meaning that should be respected. In many indigenous cultures, becoming a shaman is connected to a particular community, lineage and spiritual tradition. It may involve years of apprenticeship, initiation and recognition by the community itself. Simply completing a modern training program does not give someone the right to claim that identity.
Calling ourselves shamans, adopting the ceremonial practices of another culture, or presenting ourselves as representatives of a lineage into which we have not been initiated can cross the line into cultural appropriation.
For this reason, this program uses the term Shamanic Practitioner. We are learning and practicing shamanic principles and techniques without claiming a cultural identity, title or authority that is not ours.
Finding Your Own Way
Shamanism does not belong to one culture.
Long before the development of our modern religious traditions, people throughout the world lived in relationship with the land, the elements, animals, ancestors and the unseen world. While the ceremonies, language and practices differed from culture to culture, the human relationship with Spirit and nature existed across the globe.
This path is therefore not about becoming more like another culture. It is about becoming more deeply connected to your own.
Students are encouraged to explore their ancestry, their land, their family traditions and the spiritual practices that may exist within their own lineage. Rather than borrowing another culture’s ceremonies because they appear more “shamanic,” we can honor the wisdom of those traditions while asking a much more personal question: What wisdom do my ancestors hold?
Throughout this program, students will learn and practice the foundational techniques of shamanism while exploring how these practices have been understood and used across different traditions. As your experience grows, you will begin to integrate what you have learned with your own ancestry, relationship with the land, helping spirits and direct revelation. The techniques provide the foundation, but they are not meant to confine the work. There is room for Spirit to teach you, for your own lineage to emerge, and for your practice to develop in a way that is authentic to you.
Why Train at Muktinath Holistic Center?
Becoming a Shamanic Practitioner takes time. This is not a weekend certification or a single course designed to give you a collection of techniques and send you out to practice. The Shamanic Practitioner Certification at MHC is an extensive course of study developed to give students the knowledge, practical experience, personal growth and relationship with Spirit necessary to become confident, responsible practitioners.
The program is intentionally taught as a series of individual courses over two or more years. Students can move through the training at their own pace, allowing time between courses to practice, integrate and deepen their experience. Each course stands on its own, so you may begin simply because a particular subject interests you and later decide to continue toward full Practitioner Certification.
Training at MHC places a strong emphasis on doing the work. You will journey, practice healing techniques, participate in ceremony, work with other students, receive healing yourself and gradually gain experience working on behalf of others. As you progress, the focus moves beyond learning individual techniques into understanding how to listen to Spirit, discern what is needed and bring different shamanic practices together appropriately.
Just as importantly, we are not training students to reproduce someone else's spiritual path. You will be exposed to ancient practices, core shamanic principles and wisdom from different traditions while being encouraged to explore your own ancestry, develop your own relationships with helping spirits and discover how Spirit communicates directly with you.
Who Are Our Students?
There is no single type of person who finds their way to this work.
Some students come with the clear intention of becoming professional Shamanic Practitioners. Others are already Reiki practitioners, energy healers, therapists, bodyworkers or spiritual practitioners who want to bring shamanic understanding and techniques into the work they already offer.
Some come primarily for themselves.
They feel called to understand the spirit world more deeply, strengthen their connection with nature, explore their ancestral lineage, develop relationships with helping spirits or experience shamanic healing and personal transformation without any intention of working professionally.
And some simply feel drawn to a particular course without yet knowing where that interest will lead.
All are welcome.
But completing the full Shamanic Practitioner Certification asks something more. This path requires a willingness to move beyond what is familiar, to enter the unknown, move through fear, question what you think you know and allow your experiences to change the way you understand yourself and the world around you. The work can challenge you, surprise you and transform you. Becoming a practitioner means being willing to do your own work as deeply as you learn to facilitate it for others.
You do not need to identify with a particular religion or spiritual belief system, and you do not need previous shamanic experience to begin. What matters is a willingness to learn, experience, practice and remain open to what you discover along the way.
You do not have to decide at the beginning that you want to become a Shamanic Practitioner. You can simply begin.
“Wanderer, there is no path,
the path is made by walking.”
-Antonio Machado
Begin Where You Feel Called
There is no need to commit to the entire Shamanic Practitioner Certification before you begin. Explore the courses being offered and simply start with the one that calls to you.
We encourage students who are new to shamanism to begin with Introduction to Shamanism, as it provides an important foundation in shamanic journeying, the spirit worlds, direct revelation, discernment and many of the principles we will build upon throughout the program. It is not required as your first course, however, and you are welcome to enter the program through another class that speaks to you. Some advanced courses will have prerequisites when previous skills or experience are necessary.
If, somewhere along the way, you realize that you would like to complete the full Shamanic Practitioner Certification, we will help you bring the pieces together. Certification will require completion of all Core Courses, a selection of Complementary Courses, supervised and independent skills practice, written reflection, and several in-depth case studies working with clients over multiple sessions. The intention is to demonstrate not only that you have studied the material, but that you have integrated it and can apply what you have learned with confidence, discernment and integrity.
And you do not need to keep track of everything yourself. We will maintain a record of the qualifying courses you complete at MHC. If you take one class now, another six months from now, and only later realize that you have been building your way toward certification, everything you have already completed will be there.
There is no deadline and no prescribed pace. Begin where you feel called, and allow the path to unfold from there.

Core Courses
The Core Courses form the foundation of the Shamanic Practitioner Certification and represent the essential knowledge, practices and healing skills we believe every practitioner should experience and understand. Together they build your ability to journey, work with Spirit, navigate the unseen realms, facilitate healing, practice discernment and serve others responsibly.
These courses do not need to be completed all at once or necessarily in a specific order, although some will build upon skills learned in earlier classes and may have prerequisites.
All Core Courses are required for Shamanic Practitioner Certification.
Elective Courses
The Elective Courses allow you to expand your shamanic training into the areas that most interest you and begin shaping a practice that reflects your own path. These classes explore additional healing techniques, spiritual relationships, ceremonial practices and specialized areas of shamanic work beyond the essential foundation taught within the Core Courses.
Choose the courses that call to you. Your interests, natural abilities, personal experiences and relationship with Spirit will help guide where you want to deepen your study. No two practitioners need to develop in exactly the same way, and these courses leave room for your training to become increasingly your own.
Our Elective Course offerings continue to grow, with new topics and areas of shamanic study added regularly. Check back often to see where the path might lead you next.
A required number of Elective Courses must be completed as part of the full Shamanic Practitioner Certification.
Walking the Shamanic Path
Learning shamanic techniques is only one part of this journey. As you deepen your relationship with Spirit, experience the work for yourself and allow it to become part of your life, the path begins to unfold in ways that are deeply personal. While that journey will be different for everyone, there are three things we see again and again in those who immerse themselves in this path.
Reclaim Your Power
Shamanism is a path of empowerment and healing, helping us recover what has been lost, release what has kept us limited and return to greater wholeness. As you move through your own healing and transformation, you begin to stand more fully in who you are and the power you carry.
Trust Your Inner Knowing
Through direct revelation, you learn to ask, listen and experience Spirit for yourself. With practice comes discernment, and with experience comes a deeper trust in your intuition, your relationship with Spirit and your ability to recognize what you know.
See the World Differently
As your relationship with nature and the unseen realms deepens, the world begins to look and feel different. The Earth becomes alive with relationship, the unseen becomes part of the seen, and you begin to recognize the connections between yourself, Spirit, nature and the greater web of life.
Frequently Asked Questions….
-
Introduction to Shamanism is the foundation course for the Shamanic Practitioner Certification and is strongly encouraged early in your training. While it is not currently required before beginning the program, students will ultimately need to complete it as part of their Core Course requirements. Some individual courses may also have prerequisites when specific journeying or healing skills are needed to participate.
For now, you are welcome to begin with the course that calls to you and build from there.

There is no set timeline for completing the Shamanic Practitioner Certification. Courses are offered throughout the year, so your path will depend on the course schedule as well as your own availability to attend. Completing the full certification also requires practice, case studies and time to integrate the work between courses.
This is intentionally a long-term course of study and is not meant to be rushed. In shamanism, the journey itself is as important as the destination. Give yourself the time to experience the work, grow through it and become the practitioner, rather than simply working toward the certificate.
-
Please understand though that this program is NOT designed for online or recorded only completion. It is our goal to have you feel confident in the practice of shamanism and that is really only possible with at lease some Live participation.
You will find certain classes may have a zoom option for all or part of the course. While this is fine for those portions of the program, you will find it difficult to complete the entire certification program in this format.
We suggest reaching out if you are curious but unsure if this program can fit your needs.
-
We keep our Shamanic courses intentionally small for intimate learning and plenty of time for through Q&A. There is typically less than 10 students per course session.
-
The Shamanic Practitioner Certification is designed to encourage independence as you develop your own relationship with Spirit and grow into your work as a practitioner. However, independent does not mean unsupported.
Our quarterly Skills Practice sessions are an important part of the program and provide an opportunity to come back together, practice techniques, ask questions, receive guidance and work through situations you may be encountering as your skills develop. These sessions also allow us to go deeper into the work, revisit techniques from previous courses and continue learning from one another through shared experience.
Sierra is available throughout your training for questions and guidance, and your Certification Consultation gives us an opportunity to review your progress individually and help you determine what you still need to complete.
Perhaps most importantly, you become part of a community of students and practitioners who are learning, practicing and growing alongside you. While much of the shamanic path is deeply personal, you do not have to walk it alone.
-
Yes! Qualifying shamanic courses you have previously completed at MHC can count toward your certification requirements.
However, if it has been some time since you took a particular course, we strongly encourage you to sit in on it again. Your understanding of the material changes as your experience grows, and revisiting a course through the lens of becoming a practitioner can offer an entirely different level of learning. Past students are welcome to repeat prior completed courses by donation, making it easy to refresh your knowledge and skills as you move toward certification.
-
We keep a record of the qualifying courses you complete at MHC, so you do not need to know from the beginning that you intend to pursue certification. However, once you decide to set the intention to complete the full program, we encourage you to keep track of your progress as well.
During your Certification Consultation, we will review what you have already completed, go over the remaining requirements in greater detail, and provide guidance for tracking your courses, practice, case studies and other requirements as you move toward certification.
-
You don't! At least not when you begin. You are welcome to take individual courses, explore the concepts and allow your interest in shamanism to develop naturally. Everything you complete along the way can become part of your certification should you later decide this is the path you want to pursue.
When you reach the point where you feel ready to set the intention to become a Shamanic Practitioner, we encourage you to schedule your Certification Consultation. Together we will review what you have already completed, discuss the full requirements and help you create a plan for completing the program.
